Port Authority in brief
The Port Authority is the manager, operator and developer of Rotterdam’s port and industrial area. We invest in the development of the existing port area, new port sites (Maasvlakte 2), public infrastructure and in the handling of shipping traffic. Our goal is to strengthen the port of Rotterdam’s competitive position as a logistics hub and industrial complex of world standing. Not only in terms of size, but also quality.

Core tasks
The core tasks of the Port of Rotterdam Authority are the sustainable development, management and operation of the port and continued smooth and safe handling of shipping traffic.

Structure and shareholders

The Port of Rotterdam Authority is a non-listed public limited company. Shares in the Port of Rotterdam Authority are held by: the Municipality of Rotterdam (approx. 70%) and the Dutch State (approx. 30%).

Number of employees
The Port Authority employs approximately 1,200 staff.

Company profile 
The Port of Rotterdam Authority is manager, operator and developer of Rotterdam’s port and industrial area. The Port Authority is a public limited company (N.V.) with two shareholders: the Municipality of Rotterdam and the Dutch State. As is apparent from the objects stated in the articles of association, we operate in two domains: shipping and the port area.

Our objectives under the articles of association are:

· The development, construction, management and operation of the port and industrial area in Rotterdam
·  Promoting the effective, safe and efficient handling of shipping in the port of Rotterdam and the offshore approaches to the port.
The Port Authority of Rotterdam lets out - on long-term leases - port sites to businesses, particularly to storage firms, cargo terminals and the chemical and petrochemical industry, including energy producers. The main sources of income are rents and harbour dues.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority invests in the development of new port sites, particularly Maasvlakte 2, in public infrastructure such as roads in the port area, and in customer-specific infrastructure such as quay walls and jetties. In order to handle shipping as effectively as possible, we are investing heavily in a traffic management system, traffic control centres and patrol vessels.

A total of 1,239 people are employed by the Port Authority.


Mission and strategy 
The Port of Rotterdam Authority is an autonomous company with two shareholders, the municipality of Rotterdam and the Dutch state. Although publicly owned it is run like a commercial company.

Our mission statement is:“The Port of Rotterdam Authority develops, in partnership, the world-class European port”. We continuously improve the port of Rotterdam, to make it the most efficient, safe and sustainable port in the world. We create value for customers by developing logistical chains, networks and clusters. We do this in Europe as well as in growth markets worldwide. The Port Authority is an entrepreneurial port developer, and as such the partner for world-class customers in the following market segments: the petrochemical industry, energy (oil and gas), transport & logistics. In this way, we strengthen the competitive position of the Netherlands as a whole.





Strategy
On the basis of five strategic ambitions we describe how we aim to realize our vision:


      i.  Rotterdam Homebase & Showcase: The Port Authority will continue to do its utmost to develop Rotterdam’s port and industrial complex as the most efficient, most sustainable and safest of its kind in the world.

    ii.   Partnering with best in class customers: The Rotterdam Port Authority will strive, in the coming years, to develop even closer customer relationships at the management level. These relationships are often international, contribute towards the development of Rotterdam, the positioning of the Port Authority in chains and networks, and towards achieving our international ambitions.

   iii.    Be the entrepreneurial developer: In the past, the Port Authority took on new roles to improve the quality of the home base. Examples include Port base, the Traffic Management Company, Keyrail and property development. In the period ahead, the Port Authority will continue to create value for clients. We do this by fleshing out new roles and taking on new tasks, mainly in connection with the construction and utilisation of infrastructure.

   iv.    Creating value in logistical chains and networks: The Port Authority is to invest actively in strengthening the position of the port of Rotterdam in hinterland networks, maritime networks and the regional port network. We create added value for shippers and carriers by developing and optimising these chains and networks.

    v.    Connecting with growth markets: The Port Authority is known to be an enterprising port developer, which offers its clients business opportunities via participations in growth markets throughout the world. In this way, we strengthen our customer relationships. This is also very important for the development of the port of Rotterdam.

In 2030, Rotterdam is Europe’s most important port and industry complex. It’s a strong combination of the Global Hub and Europe’s Industrial cluster, both leading in efficiency and sustainability. Rotterdam is closely connected with other North West European industrial and logistics areas.Leading companies invest in modern facilities. Cooperation between companies, government and universities results in a high quality labour market, good quality of life and accessibility. Our adaptive powers are unique.
Thus, Rotterdam is a major pillar for the prosperity
in the Rijnmond area, The Netherlands and Europe.

These core values and other values and standards, such as integrity, are described in the Business Code of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. This code sets out who we are, what we stand for and what we feel is important in business and public life. Internal and external. The code contains guidelines that state clearly what is and is not permitted.
